Baby It’s Cold Outside

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Brrrr!!! It’s getting cold out there! I don’t know about you but I dress myself with so many layers in the winter you might as well call me an onion.

Me in the Cold

I have to mentally prepare myself for the cold that awaits when I peel off my nice warm blankets in the morning. I slip into my housecoat and fuzzy slippers, head down to the kitchen, cook up a warm breakfast of eggs and toast or honey coconut oatmeal, and pour a hot cup of coffee as the sun starts to rise. Before I leave for work I usually make a thermos of my favourite tea, layer on the shirts, thick wool socks, coat, scarf, fuzzy boots, toque… And I’m good. Ready to embrace the day. It kind of feels like a lot of work sometimes but a girls gotta’ do what a girls gotta’ do… Unless you’re a cow. Then you don’t have to do anything.

Moo in the Cold

First off they’re big ladies so they generate a lot of their own body heat, and the smart people who built EcoDairy installed curtains in the barn windows so that they can be drawn up on those chilling cold days, preventing cold wind from blasting into the barn but still allowing for lots of fresh air, and it traps some of the body heat the cows make!

Cows also naturally grow a thicker coat in the winter months to stay warm. How cool would it be if we could do that? In the spring they simply shed off the excess thick hairs when they’re finished with them for the season.

Cows have it pretty easy, and at EcoDairy and you can see it all firsthand and learn more about how cows stay warm in the winter when you tour!
