Earth Day 2017!
“Founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada is a national charity that inspires and supports people across the country to connect with nature and build resilient communities.”
In appreciation of Earth Day tomorrow we want to feature a few eco-friendly aspects of EcoDairy. “Eco-friendly” means “not harmful to the environment”.
SAVE THE TREES!
In 2006 there was a massive outbreak of pine beetles in BC which ended up causing a lot of destruction in our pine forests, luckily some of the wood was salvaged and used towards new building structures like our discovery center ceiling!
NO WATER WASTED!
Next time you’re visiting the animals at our outdoor exhibit you’ll notice a big green tub structure, which is where we collect rain water for onsite irrigation use, so in those hot summer months instead of pulling fresh water from the hose, we can use up what we have stored up in the collection tank as a more efficient way of keeping things green.
THERE’S POWER IN THE POO!
One of our favourite parts of our guided tour is talking about the anaerobic digester and how it can actually transform our cow’s manure into three useful by-products: Fertilizer, bedding, and the methane biogas that bubbles out can be used toward powering the dairy and the electric car charger in our parking lot. It’s amazing what you can do with poo!
