LOVE Ag Week Recap
Well, it seems as though our week of celebrating our love for local agriculture clashed with winter's own prideful week of celebrating itself... I mean, WE LOVE SNOW DAYS but it's almost like winter said "oops, I overslept and missed Christmas so now i'm just going to make up for it two months later and dump myself all over the Fraser Valley for a week straight if you don't mind?!"
Thankfully the roads cleared up enough just in time for our Pro D Camp, but there was still lots of snow in our back field to play in and to EAT!
Our farm fresh science experiment/recipe of the day was maple snow treats, and they were a hit with our campers and camp leaders alike.
We collected a tray of snow, and followed camp leader Lacy's instructions. We found a recipe online that you can try at home if we get another dump of snow, at happyhooligans.ca
- Real Maple Syrup 1-2 cups
- clean fresh snow
- popsicle sticks
- baking sheet
- candy thermometer
Pat a layer of snow onto a baking sheet
Place maple syrup in a pot on the stove, and bring to a boil
Using a candy thermometer, continue to boil until syrup reaches the soft ball stage (235º -240ºF)
Remove from heat and pour syrup over snowy baking sheet
Press popsicle stick into syrup and roll it up into a candy pop
The best way to wash down a sweet treat is with a cold glass of refreshing milk, and last week also happened to be the launch of our "NEW" (once called Vitala Milk) ECODAIRY MILK! It makes sense, doesn't it? Stay tuned for a blog entry explaining why we decided to make the change, and for now.. Check out this fresh new label! You can find EcoDairy Milk next door to us at Nature's Pickins Market.
And to add just one more exciting announcement we welcomed some new baby goats, born just one day before BC Family Day. We're still expecting one additional birth so stay tuned for the announcement!
It just goes to show that even when life slows down for everyone else, when there's snow days and most of us are stuck at home, life on the farm never stops. Our farmers still wake up and brave the cold, feed the animals, check their health, assist in births, repair farm machinery, fix clogs in the manure pit, deliver animal feed, harvest food, the list goes on and on and really never stops. It's not always glamorous but many farmers would say they wouldn't trade their job for any other.
The celebration isn't over!
