SPRING ON THE FARM AT ECODAIRY

SPRING ON THE FARM AT ECODAIRY

Well Spring feels in full force here on the EcoDairy farm!

The sun is shining. The grass is growing. The dandelions are popping up. The trees and shrubs are budding. The bee boxes are a buzz.

The lambs have arrived and the kids (baby goats) are due any day now.

I am not kidding but the goat will be kidding soon.

But how can we be sure?

TELL TALE SIGNS THAT BABY GOATS WILL BE ARRIVING ANY DAY NOW

Well, there is the due date: we know when the ram Billy Buck paid his visit to the goats and according to Goat Whisperer Steve’s calculations, the kids are due any day now

And then there are tell tale signs with the goat or should I say tell tail...

Goat Tail: the goat will start lifting her tail, you’ll notice discharge and swelling on the back end…eventually the tail ligaments will seem to disappear, the tail might droop and may even appear crooked.

Goat Udder: the udder will get fuller and fuller as labor approaches and will grow quite engorged and tight and may even drip.

Goat Behavior: the goat will exhibit a few human like behaviors (says a mom who has had babies before) the goat will nest, pawing around to find a good spot and clean it up a little, the goat will likely move around a lot as it tries to get comfortable, up down, here there.  As labor approaches the goat may try to get away and be alone, may press her head into a corner and pant and as contractions begin will arch her back.

ANY DAY NOW

I just checked on the goats and it looks like the kids will be arriving any day now.  Come by EcoDairy and see for yourself if she is showing signs of kidding.

We will let nature take its course as we keep a close eye on our goats and who knows maybe next time you visit the farm we might have some new arrivals.
